Did you know that sending e-mails has an impact on the planet? Even if to us it is just one small e-mail the cumulation effect of all the mail we receive in our inbox in one year is massive …
In today’s digital age, sending emails has become an essential part of our daily routine. We use emails to communicate with colleagues, friends, and family, share documents, and stay up to date with news and events. However, what many of us don’t realize is that every email we send has a carbon footprint, and this footprint is contributing to climate change.
According to a report by Eco2Greetings, a single text-based email emits 4g of CO². This may not seem like much, but when you consider the number of emails we send and receive every day, the impact is significant. In fact, assuming that half of the world’s population sends one email a day, the annual carbon footprint of email communication is equivalent to the emissions of over 3 million cars.
The carbon footprint of an email doesn’t just come from the energy required to send it. It also comes from the manufacturing of the equipment and infrastructure required to send and receive emails. This includes the energy used to power our devices, such as phones, computers, and routers, as well as the servers that store and transmit emails. Its content also makes vary the impact, a text-based email may emit only 4g of CO², but an email with multiple attachments can emit up to 50g of CO². Because attachments require more energy to upload and download, and the larger the file size, the more energy is required.
To put this into perspective, consider the impact of the average person’s inbox. If you receive 50 emails a day, with half of them containing attachments, your annual carbon footprint from email communication is approximately 825.9g. That may seem insignificant, but it’s equivalent to driving a car for almost 2 miles in a fossil fuel-powered vehicle.
What can we do to reduce the environmental impact of our email communication? One solution is to simply send fewer emails. Instead of sending multiple emails, try consolidating your thoughts and sending one email with all the information you need to convey. You can also reduce the size of your attachments or use cloud-based storage services to share files.
Another solution is to use more energy-efficient devices, such as laptops and smartphones with longer battery life, and to power them with renewable energy sources, such as solar power. You can also consider using email providers that prioritize environmental sustainability, such as those that use renewable energy to power their servers or those that have implemented carbon offset programs.
To help understand your own carbon footprint from email communication, you can use online tools like the email calculator provided by CWJobs. Enter the number of emails you send and receive each day, the calculator can estimate your annual carbon footprint from email communication.
Being more mindful of our email habits and adopting more sustainable practices, we can reduce our carbon footprint and help protect our planet for future generations.
