Sheikh Hamdan’s Single-Use Product Ban: A Detailed Timeline

Starting 2024, Dubai phases out plastics. Get all the details on Sheikh Hamdan's plan for a sustainable, green Dubai.

In a landmark initiative for environmental conservation, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has introduced a comprehensive resolution targeting single-use products. This move is aligned with global environmental trends; for instance, the European Union has committed to making all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030.

This resolution stands out for its detailed timeline and phased approach, emphasizing both immediate action and long-term sustainability goals.

Timeline of Implementation

Phase 1: January 1, 2024

Plastic Bags Ban: Prohibition of plastic bags. This aligns with global statistics, where, according to the Earth Policy Institute, a trillion single-use plastic bags are used worldwide annually.

Phase 2: June 1, 2024

Non-Plastic Single-Use Products Ban: A ban on all non-plastic single-use products like bags.

Phase 3: January 1, 2025

Broader Plastic Products Ban: This phase sees the ban extend to items like plastic stirrers, table covers, cups, styrofoam food containers, straws, and cotton swabs.

Phase 4: January 1, 2026

Extended Ban on Other Single-Use Plastic Products: The final phase will see the ban extend to plastic plates, food containers, tableware, beverage cups, and their lids.

Special Exemptions and Regulations

Thin-Film Rolls and Garbage Bags: Used for packaging food items and waste management, these are exempt, primarily when intended for export.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

nitial Fine: AED 200 for the first violation.

Repeat Offense Penalty: Fines double for repeat offenses within a year, up to a maximum of AED 2,000.

Statistics underscore the urgency of such measures. According to the World Bank, the global average waste generation per person per day is about 0.74 kilograms, and this could rise to 1.42 kilograms by 2050 if no action is taken. Dubai’s model offers a blueprint for other cities and nations aiming to tackle the pressing issue of environmental degradation and promote a more sustainable future.
